Hispaniolan
Parrot
Amazona ventralis
Photographed in the wild
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic Sep 2016
Currently
categorized as vulnerable by Bird Life International, this species is a large bright green parrot relieved by the white forehead, blue flight feathers,
maroon belly-patch and red in the tail. It is endemic and is mainly confined to
the Dominican Republic in the present-day.
Additional
populations of this Amazon have been introduced to Puerto Rico and the US
Virgin Islands. With the decline in Dominican Republic continuing, the result
of habitat destruction and illegal trade, the increase in numbers on Puerto
Rico is welcome news. In its native range, the Hispaniolan Parrot occurs in
lowland palm savannas and montane forest, and breeds between February and May,
in a hole in a tree.
